A Night to Remember: Minerva Football Earns 1st EBC Victory Since 2019 with a 7-0 Win over Marlington

Alliance, OH- Every team undergoes a rebuilding phase. For some, this period lasts a year or two. Others see the rebuild eclipse the half-decade mark. What if a rebuild sees a team go 4-96 across 10 years, leading into a new era? How do they rebuild? Zach Slates and the new look Minerva Lions have answered this question by improving to 5-3 on the year with a 7-0 victory over the Marlington Dukes.

“Minerva had a long tradition of smashmouth football, and it has been great to see it come back again,” remarked Minerva High School Athletic Director Garth Evans, “I am very excited for this school, town, and community to see success in football again.”

Minerva began the game with the football, but would proceed to fumble deep in Duke territory. After leading Marlington down inside the Minerva 35-yard line, Tyler Walder’s fourth-down scramble came up short, giving the rock right back to the Lions.

Minerva quarterback Kannon Kirkpatrick has been working on his passing all season, and it paid off in a big way on the ensuing drive. With 2nd down and 19 in front of him, Kirkpatrick found Owen Shick over the top for a massive first down inside the Dukes’ five-yard line. A few plays later, Skylar Lab would run to the corner of the endzone to sneak it in for the game’s lone touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Both defenses proceeded to dominate the final three quarters. In total, the Lions’ defense stopped Marlington three separate times on fourth down. Still, a few players on both squads managed to put up solid numbers.

Looking at Marlington, both Blaize Horn and Caden Dine ran the ball effectively. Horn had 77 yards on 6 carries, while Dine had 45 yards on 8 attempts. In the air, Cole Jones had 46 yards on 5 receptions. Finally, Walder went 9/16 with 76 passing yards. Their big loss came in the form of Cameron Evanich, who suffered a season-ending arm injury during the Dukes’ loss at Carrollton.

As for the Lions, it was the running game that stole the show as expected. Breakout Sophomore Timmy Kirkpatrick ran the rock 24 times for 171 yards. Nate Linkous followed him up with 13 carries that resulted in 45 yards. K. Kirkpatrick went 2/2 passing with 44 yards.

Circling back to Evans, he made sure to give everyone credit when talking about this revival, as he said,

“Everyone involved has been a part of this rejuvenation in football. Students, staff, band, cheerleaders, players, and coaches because they all believe the team can win, and that’s been great to see.”

Up next for the mighty Lions–the Alliance Aviators. Despite losing 34-28 on the road at West Branch, A-Town is looking poised to host a playoff game in Region 9.

As for the Dukes, this loss sees them eliminated from playoff contention in Region 13. They are on the road in week 9 as they take on Salem.

No matter what happens for the Minerva Lions during the home stretch of their 2025 campaign, one thing is certain. This small Ohio town, divided amongst Stark, Carroll, and Columbiana counties, will not forget this special group. A group that helped change the future outlook for Friday Night Lights at Dr. Robert H Hines Stadium.

Mikey Maloney Dominates in First Career Mount Union Start as the Purple Raiders Defeat Wheaton 37-29

Alliance, OH- For the 38th consecutive season, the Mount Union Purple Raiders get a win in week one by downing the Wheaton Thunder 37-29. With it, the NCAA’s longest regular-season win streak increases to 76. The last time UMU lost in the regular season was in their last game against John Carroll in Alliance.

Mount Union got the ball to begin the game and wasted no time driving down the field. Mikey Maloney picked up a first down by connecting with returning wideout Nick Turner. Maloney followed this up with a 55-yard run, putting UMU at the Wheaton seven-yard line. Three plays later, Wyatt Stiehl caught his first touchdown pass since returning to Mount after a year at Southern Florida. Ivan Maric would miss the extra point, so the score remained 6-0 with 13:17 left in the first quarter.

The Thunder would pick up nine yards on their opening drive as Mark Forcucci found Seth Kortenhoeven. However, back-to-back incompletions forced Wheaton to punt. Mount Union used the short yardage game as a launching pad during its second drive. Seven out of the nine plays on the drive went for less than 10 yards. The exceptions came in the form of a 21-yard pass to Turner and a 17-yard touchdown pass to Elmherst transfer Jacob Cockrell. Maric was able to redeem himself as he made the extra point, making it 13-0 with 7:24 left in the first quarter.

The Thunder responded on the following drive as they went 51 yards on four plays to get on the board by way of a 10-yard rushing touchdown from Matt Crider. The Purple Raiders would also respond, taking eight plays and 75 yards to find the endzone. This time, Maloney connected with Shaun Thomas on a wheel route for the 42-yard score. This made the score 20-7 as the first quarter came to a close.

Wheaton looked for an answer with a mythodical drive, but a Forcucci incompletion on the 12th play ended the drive at Mount’s 27-yard line. To make matters worse, Maloney found Cockrell for an 81-yard touchdown after being sacked on the prior play. With the Purple Raiders up by 20, the Thunder needed to get back in the game. However, another mythodical drive stalled out as Wheaton turned the ball over at UMU’s 11-yard line. From there, Mount Union would have a drive stall out after 9 plays, which was followed by a Thunder three-and-out. After trying to get down the field quickly at the end of the half, Maloney was dragged down for the second time, and the Purple Raiders opted to run the clock out. Through 30 minutes, it was Mount Union up 27-7.

The Wheaton offense would continue to have its struggles as the second half began. They would go three-and-out for the second consecutive series, this time with negative eight yards of offense. Maric would hit his first field goal of the season on the ensuing drive, making it 30-7. Keenan Cruz would get his first career interception at Mount Union on the first play of the Thunder’s next drive. This gave Maloney and the offense a short field. Turner would get into the endzone for the first time this season on a one-yard touchdown pass from Maloney. This would round out the Purple Raiders’ offense for the day as they led 37-7.

Down by 30 as the fourth quarter began, things looked bleak for Wheaton. Once again, the Thunder opted for a mythical drive. However, Forcucci was able to find the endzone on a 21-yard scamper. This made it 37-14. Junior quarterback Chase Copper would come in for Mount Union, along with sophomore running back Kayden Minner. They were able to move the ball 19 yards before a loss of two on a rush and a loss of five on a delay of game penalty, forcing Michael Franklin back onto the field to punt. Overall, two of Franklin’s punts ended up inside the 20-yard line. He averaged 44.3 yards per punt, improving on his 41 yards per punt in 2024.

With 8:15 left in the game, the Thunder offense finally clicked. Forcucci took 4:28 off the clock before finding Kortenhoeven for a 19-yard touchdown. This made it 37-21. Then, Wheaton recovered an onside kick out of nowhere. Yet again, Kortenhoeven punished the Purple Raiders as he caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Forcucci. With a successful two-point conversion, a 30-point game became a one-possession game. Maloney and the starters were forced back onto the field given the circumstances, and they got the job done. On a crucial third down, Maloney found Matt Anderson for his 19th completion of the day. However, the tight end fumbled the ball. Still, UMU was able to pounce on the rock, sealing the 37-29 victory.

“The Machine is the consistency of the program,” remarked Mount Union head coach Geoff Dartt after the game.

It’s no secret that players want to come to Alliance to play for UMU, as shown by the sheer number of players on the roster. However, Coach Dartt doesn’t want just any player.

“I think that [35 OAC losses since first title back in 1985] speaks more to the players that are choosing to come here and want to be coached hard and become the best versions of themselves…and I think it’s even more important when you recruit people, they’re good people that want to be coached and want to be developed.”

One of the best pieces of recruiting this past offseason, staying in line with Coach Dartt’s mantra, was bringing in Jacob Cockrell from Elmherst. In his Purple Raider debut, he caught three passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns.

“Meeting these coaches and players, I really wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” proclaimed Cockrell after the game.

Circling back to Mount Union’s lone interception, senior Keenan Cruz was glad to see his hard work pay off in a big way.

Cruz said, “Yeah, it’s amazing. A lot of preparation and work was put in. To see some of that pay off and finally get that [interception], that’s awesome.”

As for the Purple Raiders’ new QB 1 in Mikey Maloney, he had the definition of a dream debut. He went 19/24 with 307 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was also second on the team with 44 rushing yards.

Last season, the Riverside legend went down with an injury that ended his campaign in the win against Wilmington. However, he found comfort in God as he attributed his success to Him.

“The biggest thing being injured is the mental side of it, and I think I grew a lot as a person. My faith in God really helped me find myself, helped me be confident in His plan for me. So, I just put my faith in Him.”

During the postgame press conference with Coach Dartt, he even joked that Maloney could run for Mayor of Riverside [Painesville], showing not only that he is an excellent quarterback, but also a good person.

Next week, it’s on to Grove City as Mount Union takes on the Wolverines in their second and final 1 PM kickoff of the season. This week, Grove City made a statement as they knocked off #10 Courtland 31-14 on the road in New York.

As for Wheaton, it is another road trip next week as they take on Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. The Vikings earned a thrilling win, 42-41, in overtime on the road against Simpson in Iowa. This matchup will begin College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play for the 2025 campaign.

Mount Union had a task heading into week one-keep The Machine rolling and get the win. In the end, it’s mission accomplished for one of the prides of Alliance, albeit in a closer game than once expected. As the saying goes, a win’s a win. 13 more wins, and Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium will host the Purple Raiders in the Stagg Bowl to close out the season.

Overall the closest game by probability is Akron vs. Wyoming as the most likely game for victory is Bowling Green vs. Lafayette where BGSU has a 95.5% chance to win. Padua Football Struggles Under the Friday Night Lights in Week 1, Losing to Alliance 25-3

Parma, OH – On Friday, August 22nd the stage was set for a rematch between the Padua Bruins and Alliance Aviators. Last season these two teams met in Week 1, with Padua walking away with a 34-6 victory. This year’s matchup had different results, this time it was Alliance getting the best of Padua, winning 25-3.

The Bruins came into this game following a 5-5 regular season. However, Padua surprised many with a deep Playoff run, making it all the way to the Regional Final where they would eventually fall to Toledo Central Catholic. On other side, Alliance finished their 2024 season with a 4-6 record. Alliance started their 2024 campaign slowly, resulting in a change at Quarterback mid-season, benching Bo Davis for JR Jackson. The Aviators were hoping to start their season strong, and that would start by getting an upset on the road at Padua.

As the game began neither team could get much going, struggling to make their presence felt on offense. It wasn’t until the 1:49 mark in the 1st Quarter that we would have our first score. Aviators Running Back Ravhan Hawkins would punch in a 6-yard rushing touchdown, putting Alliance up 6-0 following a missed PAT.

Padua was unable to answer the Aviators scoring drive, and had a trouble finding a rhythm on offense in the early portions of the game. The troubles only continued for Padua when Quarterback Landon Hanover was unable to connect with his man on a screen pass, instead throwing an interception early in the 2nd Quarter. Following the turnover Alliance drove down the field, putting quarterback JR Jackson in position for a 2-yard rushing touchdown putting Alliance up 13-0 with 5:48 remaining in the half.

Following Alliance’s second score of the game Padua was unable to answer yet again, giving the Aviators another opportunity to score before the end of the half. Alliance would make their way down the field, getting inside the 20-yard line setting the Aviators up for another scoring drive. However, Padua’s defense would come up big forcing a turnover on downs with 1:05 remaining in the half.

The Bruins would have one last chance to put points on the board before the end of the half. Hanover began to get in a rhythm, hitting Receivers Reed Cervenka and Brady Devore to get the Bruin’s offense to midfield. With 25-seconds left in the half Hanover kept it himself, rushing for 10-yards and getting out of bounds to stop the clock. Padua’s offense continued to get up field setting up Kicker Caleb Zolkowski for a 41-yard field goal. Zolkowski sent it right down the middle, putting Padua on the board for the first time of the night, making it 13-3 going into the half.

Following a lackluster 1st Half, the Bruins hoped to carry their momentum from the end of the half into the 3rd Quarter. Unfortunately for Padua, JR Jackson and the Aviators had other plans. Jackson was able to put two more touchdowns on the board in the 3rd Quarter. The first was a 5-yard rushing touchdown with 5:15 left in the half. The second was a 15-yard passing touchdown to Receiver Tajie Nicholson. with under 11-seconds left in the 3rd Quarter. Alliance would roll into the 4th Quarter up 25-3 following two unsuccessful 2-pt conversion tries.

Not much would change for the Bruin’s offense as they would put up another scoreless quarter, allowing Alliance to coast to the finish line on the road. With a final score of 25-3, the Aviators would take their first game of the season, starting off on the right foot. For Padua, it was a disappointing start to their season in front of a packed student section.

After the game I talked to Lineman Bo Barney about how the team is going to move forward following a rough Week 1 loss. Barney said going forward the team has to ‘fix the easy mistakes up front, lead the young guys, and finish drives.’ I also talked to Receiver Brady Devore about how the team will keep their moral up after a disappointing opening loss and he said, ‘We need to keep our heads up, focusing on learning from our mistakes, sticking to the basics, but realize that we have a lot of football ahead of us.’

The Bruins will be back in action next Friday, August 29th at home against Benedictine, where they’ll look to get in the win column.

Holy Name Football Dominates Thursday Night Lights, Defeating Parma Rivals Normandy 55-12

Parma, OH- After a round one exit in the 2024 season, Holy Name looked to begin the 2025 campaign on a high note. They did just that, beating Normandy 55-12. This win is the first week 1 win since 2022 for the Green Wave.

The game started with a bold play from Normandy-an onside kick. After the ball was bobbled by HN, the Invaders quickly pounced and took the football. However, the Normandy offense could not get rolling. Nick Nemeth had a TFL while Kae’Leon Cleveland sacked the Invaders quarterback Jakob Muniak.

Holy Name wasted no time on their opening drive as the offensive unit found good rhythm and balance. Eso Gonzalez helped Holy Name quarterback Connor Jamison by making a big 15-yard catch. That reception would set up Xavier Rodriguez to score the Green Wave’s first touchdown of the new year on a 27-yard rush. With 8:38 on the clock in the first, HN led 7-0.

Muniak was able to find a receiver to begin the Invaders’ second drive, but Blake Troy and Tommy Ontko forced a fumble that was recovered by Noah Wallace. Receptions from Brendon Preisel and Nemeth set up Kayden Parker for a one-yard rushing score, putting Holy Name up 14-0. To follow it up, the Namer defense remained strong, forcing a three-and-out.

On the following drive, Gonzalez would make two catches. The first went for 12 yards while the second was a 21-yard touchdown. This score gave Holy Name a 21-0 lead heading into the second quarter. For context, the Green Wave averaged 14 points per game in 2024. Additionally, they scored 21 points the last time they played Normandy.

The Invaders’ fortunes would seemingly change for the better as Cameron Hayden would catch a long throw from Muniak, getting a 43-yard gain in the process. Jai Hebebrand would take his only carry to close out this drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Normandy opted to go for two, but came up short. With 9:12 left in Q2, Holy Name led 21-6. Parker would run for a first down on the following drive, but a sack from Fernando Acevedo stalled the HN offense. A Nemeth punt pinned Normandy within its own 10-yard line. Nemeth wouldn’t be done as he ended the Invaders’ drive with an interception. However, Ray Brown would force a fumble, giving his offense a chance to strike back.

Normandy would get their second big break of the second quarter as Nick Williams caught a 54-yard pass from Brown. This set up Acevedo for a two-yard rushing score. Just like the first attempt, the two-point try was unsuccessful for the Invaders. With 4:07 on the clock in the first half, HN led 21-12. Both sides would trade fumbles, bringing the Namer offense back onto the field. Nemeth had a few knocks in this game, but he bounced back nicely with a 20-yard rushing touchdown. Then, he returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown. At halftime, Holy Name led 34-12.

Williams would come back for another highlight reel play in the third quarter as he hauled in a 33-yard reception. Once again, however, HN had the last laugh as Preisel would pick off Muniak. Nemeth would continue his stellar game as he had 14 and 12 yard receptions along with 19 and 4 yard rushes, with the latter rush being a touchdown. Luke Hudak would join the INT parade with one of his own on the following drive. Parker would find the endzone after Holy Name got the ball back. Just like his first touchdown, his second came on a one-yard rush. That put Holy Name up 48-12.

The Green Wave would end their excellent scoring night with some fireworks. Noah Wallace returned an interception 30 yards for a pick-six, the second of the game for HN. However, it would be Troy who caught the final interception of the game for the Green Wave. Troy’s INT marked six on the night for the Namers. Hudak would come in for Jamison to close out the game as Holy Name earned its first win of the next season, 55-12.

Last season, Jamison had some trouble with interceptions. In total, he had 12 in 10 games during the 2024 season. He looked more comfortable and adjusted in the pocket and had good awareness. After the game, Holy Name head coach Dan Wondowlowski talked about the fact that Jamison should be nearing some division one offers, as he has the talent and frame. The rest of the Namer offense was improved as well. Players such as Parker, Rodriguez, and Nemeth acted as ‘gadget guys’ who moved around given the different formations.

As for the Invaders, Muniak had a couple of good passes downfield. Mario Stewart, Hayden, and Williams proved they have the talent and ability to be big weapons for the junior quarterback this season. The bulk of Brown’s carries came late in the game, potentially indicating a change in game plan heading into week two against Ravenna. Holy Name will have its penultimate home game at North Royalton’s Serpentini Chevrolet Stadium next Friday against 2024 standouts Gilmour Academy. The Lancers open up their season on Saturday against Benedictine.

MAC preview for the 2025 Football Season.

Welcome to the first article since my announcement of being the writer for MAC content on Smee Sports. Here are the previews of all the 13 football teams in the Mid American Conference this season.

Akron

After finishing 3-5 in the conference, we will advance to a new season for the Zips. They bring back quarterback Ben Finley who threw for 2,604 yards last season and had a completion percentage of 54.8%. His 9 interceptions to 16 touchdowns are notable statistics as well. We must acknowledge however that Akron needs to be an all-around team. The defense had 3 interceptions all season and 16 sacks. Their defense should not be considered poor, they have 844 tackles. This means their lineman can get the job done. . We’ll have to see how their journey begins when the Zips take on Wyoming at home on August 28th. As of now, the idea that Akron will be at Ford Field December 6th is far fetched.

Ball State

Their conference record of 2-6 (The 2nd worst in the MAC) and an overall record of 3-9. Led many people to note a difficult season for the Ball State Cardinals. Their quarterback who threw for 2,904 yards, and 25 touchdowns: Kadin Semonza has transferred to the Tulane Green Wave. Mike Uremovich has arrived for his first year in Muncie, Indiana. Currently the Cardinals are in a rebuilding stage of their football program. What this rebuild will look like, it is too early to tell. The Cardinals start on Saturday August 30th, yet they take on the unenviable task of facing the Purdue Boilermakers. Even with all odds against them, there still is a chance with Coach Uremovich in the future.

Bowling Green

A lot has changed and 2025 marks a clean slate for the Bowling Green Falcons. They now have Drew Pyne. He is a grad student from Notre Dame, Missouri and Arizona State. He will be at the helm of the offense this season. Pyne threw for 391 yards last season and recorded 3 touchdowns with an even 3 interceptions to follow. Last season, Harold Fannin Jr led their offense. He was the 67th overall pick in this year’s draft. Having 1,555 yards on 117 receptions. The biggest piece of new for BG this year. They will have head coach Eddie George who, like 5 other MAC schools; have a new head coach for 2025. BGSU will start their season at Doyt Perry Stadium on August 28th against the Lafayette Leopards. BG is set on Ford Field for December, we will need to see how others perform in the MAC. Including that school up north.

Buffalo

A 3rd place finish suits the Bulls well and they look to repeat dominance. Their quarterback C.J Ogbonna recorded 2,381 passing yards for the season with 19 touchdowns. He is a breakout player for Buffalo and a key factor of their offense. Running back Al-Jay Henderson returns from a season of 2,381 yards on 204 carries. The defense is solid. They recorded over 900 tackles during the entire season. They also achieved 13 interceptions and 33 sacks. Buffalo is a force to reckon with this season and they bring back two notable receivers to their resume. JJ Jenkens with 36 receptions for 536 yards, and Victor Snow who had 55 receptions for 651 yards. Given all the data, I predict Buffalo will be in the MAC championship game at Ford Field.

Central Michigan

The Chippewas finished last season with a conference record of 2-6 having conference wins against Ball State and Western Michigan. While their record struggled and they only had one non conference win. Matt Drinkall will be in charge of the program for his first season in 2025. He has 22 years of coaching experience, leading many to believe this season could be improvement at CMU. Veteran quarterback Joe Labas will return to the Maroon and Yellow on the offense. He recorded 1,114 yards passing on 160 attempts with a completion percentage of 58.8%. As for the defense Senior Jordan Kwiatkowski returns as the linebacker had 96 tackles last season. Improving on his 32 tackles in 2023. The Mount Pleasant destination is still uncertain. However, we will see their season opener on August 29th as they travel to San Jose State.

Eastern Michigan

Finishing with the same conference record as neighbor Central Michigan, but a better overall record at 5-7. The Eagles are coming into the 2025 season with big shoes to fill. Chris Creighton has led EMU since 2014 and will be a rarity in the conference. Leading a program longer than any other coach in the MAC and tied with Miami of Ohio head coach Chuck Martin. Quarterback Cole Snyder and running back Delbert Mimms III left due to graduation. They will rely on veteran wide receiver Terry Lockett jr. who had 660 yards on 46 receptions. In 2025, their new quarterback will be either Jerimiah Salem who served as a backup to Snyder last season. He recorded 126 yards on 11 attempts, with a completion percentage of 72.7%. With a lot of new and established coaching, Eastern Michigan will begin their season on August 30th as they face the Texas State Bobcats on the road.

Kent State

Dubbed the worst team in college football by Bleacher Report and many other content creators on YouTube. Kent State finished 2024 with a record of 0-12. They have won only a single game in the last two seasons, leading many to speculate. Interim head coach Mark Carney will begin to rebuild the program after years of disappointment. Many players including QB Tommy Ulatowski, WR Chrishon McCray, and S Josh Baka have transferrd to different universities. While many things are worrisome for the Golden Flashes. A positive note is they are rebuilding from their shortcomings. A new head coach, backups now becoming starters such as QB Devin Kargman. He had a 2024 record of 432 passing yards, 3 touchdowns with a QBR of 106.3 for an overall completion percentage 54.9%. While this may seem low, there was improvement as his percentage was 51.2%. KSU will not be competing for a MAC title this year based on stats. However, no rebuild happens overnight. Kargman has two more seasons of eligibility and if Kent can recruit. We will see a very different Kent State than the one we have now.

UMass

Return customers to the Mid American Conference, the Minutemen return as they had been independent since 2015. Dawning a record of 2-10 last season, they had played 5 other MAC schools. Signs were there that they would return home to the MAC, but even with a homecoming. There is still plenty of work to be done. Head Coach Joe Harasymiak will take over the program. Wide Receiver Jakobie Keeny- James will not return as he is now with the Detroit Lions. Last season he had 839 receiving yards for UMass. As at QB signs point towards AJ Hairston being the new QB for the minutemen. Last season he had a 54.8% Completion, for 480 yards and 5 touchdowns. He will definitely see the field more this season only playing in 4 games last season. Where the Minutemen will go in 2025 is to be determined but, we’ll follow along with an addition to the conference.

Miami of Ohio

Finishing 2nd in the conference last season with a record of 7-1 and an overall record of 9-5. Miami of Ohio is going to see a lot of change coming into 2025. While they still have head coach Chuck Martin who’s been their coach since 2014. One could wonder what the future hold for the RedHawks. They won the Arizona Bowl yet came short in the MAC championship with a loss to Ohio. They lose quarterback Brett Gabbert who had 2,921 passing yards all season, and they lose runningback Keyon Mozee who recorded 1,098 rushing yards. On the defensive side of the ball, their new leader will be senior Silas Walters who recorded 95 tackles last season. This is an improvement to his 34 tackles in 2023, and brings up some consideration. While the players may not be in Oxford, the leadership is. Coach Martin who’s been a coach since 1992. Has experience in the game of football.

Northern Illinois

While UMass is coming back into the Mid American Conference. NIU will join the Mountain West Conference for only football in 2026. This is the end to an era that began in 1973. A .500 record of 4-4 last season places them in the middle of the pack. They could go in any direction for their future. Upsetting College Football Playoff Finalist Notre Dame is surely a holy achievement and NIU is set for a rebuild in the right way. Head Coach Thomas Hammock is back and has led the Huskies since 2019. Key figures such as QB Ethan Hampton who transferred to Illinois and WR Trayvon Rudolph left for MAC rival Toledo. Hammock looks to start sophomore Josh Holst, who threw for 593 yards and 2 touchdowns as a true freshman. Overall, this team has lost a handful of players whether to the transfer portal or to the NFL. NIU will be a .500 team again. To be successful at the college level, you need players to develop with one team.

Ohio University

The Bobcats are on top of the Mid American Conference heading into the 2025 season. After winning it all at Ford Field for the first time since 1968. They have built a foundation over time of success. Head Coach Tim Albin has led the program since 2021 and through that time the Bobcats have a 23-16 record. Returning to Athens this season is QB Parker Navarro who had 2,423 yards with 13 touchdowns to 11 interceptions last season. He’ll continue leading the offense for this season as we see some changes to the Bobcat defense. Blake Leake will return to Ohio this season as one of the team’s best linebackers. He recorded 94 tackles last season and included an interception. Other notable names are Safety DJ Walker (he had 53 tackles and 34 solo), as well as Marcel Walker-Burgess. As the team goes into the season they battle difficult opponents, but have the ability to return to Detroit.

Toledo

Tucker Gleason is back at quarterback for the Toledo Rockets for his senior season. He had a 60.5% completion as well as 2,793 passing yards and 24 touchdowns last season, the best stats of his career. As for the run game they will be with Connor Walendzak with 458 rushing yards in 2024 on 128 carries. Now for the Rockets they also lose Daniel Bolden to graduation and Maxen Hook to the NFL. Their receiving core however is still there with Junior Vandeross III. He had 957 receiving yards last season with 5 touchdowns and averaged 11.3 yards per reception. As the main target for Toledo after last year target Jerjuan Newton went to the Broncos, the offense is as strong as ever for UT. Braden Awls returns as well defensively overall with 72 tackles as a sophomore and will be part of the backfield in 2025. Overall the testament to Toledo’s strength in the MAC will be shown as they take on the Kentucky Wildcats at Kroger Field on August 30th.

Western Michigan

While the Bronco hockey team won their first national championship in Men’s Ice Hockey, their football team last season finished 6-7 overall (5-3 MAC). Broc Lowry appears to be the starting QB for the Broncos this season as we saw him in 5 games last season as the team would go 2-3 during those contests. Lowry also recorded a 50% completion percentage with a QBR of 72.1 and threw for 21 yards. For running back they will have Jalen Buckley who as a 2nd string last season had 683 yards and 9 rushing touchdowns. As for the defense, we see safety Tate Hallock return as he had 84 tackles last season and will be part of the WMU backfield. The coaching staff for WMU head coach Lance Taylor is back in the saddle, as he’s been there since 2023. With an overall record of 10-15 in that time, but he has the 3rd best home record in the conference. The Broncos will be heading into the new season on the side with an existing head coach and we will see if this gives them a benefit.

This great season of high school football is set to get underway on August 21st. High school football is a new addition to SmeeSports this Fall, as we only covered one game last year. As the channel grows, so does our coverage area, sports, teams, etc. Let us know in the poll below which game you’re most excited for this season. 12 games, 12 chances to see OHSAA Football this regular season on the SmeeSports YouTube Channel.

SmeeSports to Broadcast Home Games + Week 1 for Holy Name Football

Parma Heights, OH- It is with great excitement that we have reached an agreement to broadcast home games, along with week one, this Fall for Holy Name Football.

I got my start in sports media back in 2021 with Holy Name football. For three years, I covered every single game in some capacity. During this time, I got to see two trips to the regional championship game and one final-four game. The 2023 season got cut short as results around Northeast Ohio knocked the Green Wave out of the playoffs late into the night. Since then, I have not called nor been to a football game for HN. However, I am excited to say that will change on August 21st as Holy Name takes on Normandy at Byers Field.

SmeeSports would like to extend shout-outs to Mr Mike Tworzydlo and Mr Joe Kucera for helping us make this partnership a reality. We also thank athletic director Rich Kozub and head coach Dan Wondolowski for having us cover Namer Football this season. You can catch the five home games, along with the Normandy game, live on the SmeeSports YouTube Channel. The SmeeSports Pregame Show will begin at 6:15 PM before each 7 PM kickoff.

My experience at the 2025 MAC Kickoff

Thursday July 24th was an unforgettable day. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in the world of media. Let’s break it down to bring you behind the scenes on what goes on during a conference media day. As well as show you my new position with Smee Sports as we transition into the school year. The day began early in the morning as I left Bowling Green that morning at around 6:30 in the morning. Battling mild Detroit traffic and getting ahead of the morning commute. I head inside to check in and register. Now everything in there from the people at the check-in desk. To the people with teams. Was professional. Suits everywhere with backpacks filled with cameras, helmets, and other media equipment. Players in their fanciest suits drinking coffee to prepare for the long day of interviews. Seeing each team walk in with their head coach, and two players (One offense and One defense). Was the sight to see. Cameras focused on their team. Also, various independent media outlets captured the action. I would fall under this category.

The highlight of the morning was looking down onto the turf at Ford Field. Watching it go from school to school on the jumbotrons was also thrilling. Sitting down looking over notes and enjoying breakfast I took in the atmosphere. Knowing I had to interview the local guys (Bowling Green and Toledo), I also wanted to include Kent State in my expedition. What I regret however is not talking with Akron. As we all had leisure time before commissioner Jon Steinbrecher gave his remarks. I left to clean up. Before heading over to the opposite end of the stadium, I saw a familiar face. Head BGSU football coach Eddie George, along with new quarterback Drew Pyne, and defensive end Eriq George walked in. I introduced myself to the group. We had a discussion on astro-turf. We also talked about how George played on the surface during his time with the Tennessee Titans.

After walking around and undertsanding the amosphere, it was time for Commissioner Steinbrecher to speak with us all. He spoke highly of the MAC in how the conference is in a new era. What he highlighted was the academic excellence. Stating the purpose of all Mid American Conference Athletes is to eventually gain a college degree. After his remarks, we disbanded. Everyone scattered whether their athletes would speak 1 one 1 with media, or film promotional content. My job was to interview our Bowling Green student athletes and here is what I learned.

Drew Pyne, who graduated from Notre Dame, and has been around in college football ever since 2020. Afterward he spent a year at Arizona State then Missouri before finally landing in Northwest Ohio. He spoke highly of Coach George and the offense. He said that the offensive line is a veteran staff. He knows he can put his trust into them. As for classes, he still takes them seriously. Even as a grad student; Pyne takes his academic career seriously as well. Now for Eriq George, entering his junior season after playing with Tennessee State under his father. He finds the academic side of college football is as serious as his play. The Bowling Green defense looks to be strong this season, and with George gaining a roster spot. The Falcons will rely heavily on their lines. Coach George, who is one of 6 new head coaches in the Mid American Conference. Discussed his expectations for the student athletes, as well as what he expects on the football field. In the classroom, Coach George wants his players in the first two rows. He insights as well they should not be wearing hoodies to make themselves presentable in a learning environment. He also expects Falcon football to “Leave places better than we found it”.

Talking with all of the players, media, and coaching staff. It was an honor getting to know their stories and backgrounds . Other notable athletes I talked with were Tucker Gleason and Emmanual McNeil-Warren, both of whom are with the Toledo Rockets. As for coaching I met not only Eddie George, but also Mark Carney who is the interim head coach with Kent State. I was fortunate enough to meet the broadcast crew for ESPN+. I also met other local broadcasters and reporters. As the day began to end, I noticed some of my connections with WTOL 11. It is a local CBS affiliated tv station based out of Toledo. While they were on the field, I asked if I could help. I was fortunate enough to hang out with them for a few minutes. Capturing the photo for this article and being in an NFL endzone were experiences I will never forget. As I left, I felt proud of all the work I have done. I realized that the best is yet to come. Now for the final announcement you have all been waiting for.

I will be the writer for all MAC content this fall. I will give you weekly articles about the conference. You will also get updates on how all the teams are doing. Join us as we prepare to begin the 2025-2026 academic year, Go Falcons!
